Learn a portion properly before proceeding
Many people rush through the music trying to memorize the whole song before shaping it and improving the way of playing it. My tip is to focus on the rhythm and adding good sound and feel to the section of the song before you continue to the next section. Try different ways to play it and find the one you like and make it sound great. This will help you to get it right from the start without any need to change your habit, and you will easier remember it.
Keep the rhythm
It is important to not proceed in the song before you are able to keep the rhythm. Have this as your first priority. You can even skip some notes in order to be able to keep the rhythm.
Slow down
Playing good isn’t a contest of playing fast. The ability to play fast isn’t the definition of a good musician. Are you playing too quickly you may start to miss notes and play sloppily. If the song are supposed to be played faster than you can play it properly, you need to slow down until you can get it right. Even if you manage to hit all the notes, you may still play it wrong because you’re playing faster than you are capable of yet. You need to be able to keep the rhythm and add the feel and atmosphere.
Practice playing in public
Most people feel uncomfortable and nervous when they’re not used to play for an audience. Play forsome family to get a taste of it. Play for your friends. Escalate from there to playing in small gatherings and small audiences. You’ll get more and more comfortable and eventually be ready for playing for bigger audiences. Playing for audiences or in studio is very important in my opinion to keep up the motivation. If you’re never playing for anyone, how meaningful does it feel to practice?
Keep challenging yourself!
Seems obvious, but a lot of people stop challenging themselves when they become semi-proficient at playing the instrument. You won’t improve if you don’t challenge yourself. Just like you won’t get stronger by never increasing the heaviness of the weights at the gym.
