One of the worst feelings I know is to feel I waste my time, that my life pass by and I achieve nothing. It’s the same routine every day. Go to work, home, eat dinner, some housework, take care of the kids, some TV and go to bed. Day in and day out, no variation. All the days could have been the same. Things you should have done piles up. Thing you want to do are not prioritized. The more you get into this routine, the faster the time passes by.
Want to spice up your life? Break the routine! Maybe you think you have tried this before, and it didn’t work. Maybe you don’t believe it’s “that easy” because the time is running so fast. Well, learning an instrument may help you!
How it can help you
It’s easier to break the unhealthy habit described above when you have a clear goal of what you want. Learning an instrument forces you to think differently, to structure your time better. You have more time that it seems. The reason it doesn’t seem like you’ve got any free time is because of Parkinsons law:
Work expands so as to fill the time available for its completion.
Parkinsons law
So, when you only have dinner, kids, relaxing and some housework on your agenda, this will fill all the time available until it’s time for you to go to bed. You have probably experienced days you’ve had really a lot to do, and at the end of the day it feels like what you did in the morning was yesterday because you’ve done so many things. It feels like two days! Those are really efficient days, and it feels really good to get so many things done. The reason you managed it was because you had a plan for the day, and it was a limited time available for each task. The work was limited to the time available.
When we don’t have clear plans we waste our time by working slow, watch TV, surfing Facebook, using a lot of time at the toilet, reading the new etc.
Your new level of life
By learning an instrument, it requires you to have a plan for when to do it, and when your other tasks need to be done. You have to get room for the practicing in your time schedule. Yes, that’s right, your time schedule. You most likely don’t have something like that, most people doesn’t have it.
When you have this specific goal, and are forced to plan the day more, you’re on the right track of creating healthy habits! You’re getting used to do this, and will include more of your tasks and the fun activities you want into your time schedule. When you get the taste of a structured and efficient day, you’ll never go back, because the feeling of getting more out of your life is incredible!
Includes the fun things too!
This way you’ll also have more focus on filling your life with the good things. You’ll live better and feel better. When living the way described at the beginning of this blog post, you’ll need a lot of effort to get extra things done. It’s difficult to find the energy and willpower, even for the fun parts. Living the way I just described instead, you’ll feel more engaged, have more energy and motivation, and doing necessary or fun tasks is easy and don’t require much energy or willpower to do. You’ll feel more fulfilled and energized.
This way, learning an instrument can contribute to your new and better life! And, it fulfills your dream of living out your musical passion.
